Sonitrol began over 46 years ago in the town of Anderson, Indiana, with a man named Robert Baxter. Due to Robert's love of electronics and innovative ideas, he excelled as an inventor in the field of sound waves. On June 16, 1960 Robert founded a company that would incorporate his inventions. Robert called his new company "Sonitrol". In 1963, Robert met Al Cronk, who owned a Silent Century security franchise. Al hired Robert to develop innovations in security equipment and monitoring. His inventions proved so successful that eventually all Silent Century equipment was replaced with his new Sonitrol equipment. Thus the first Sonitrol franchise was born. In 1970, Douglas M. Curtiss, Chief Executive Officer of Sonitrol of Hartford, graduated from Williams College and decided to take a summer job working with his college roommate. Doug was hired to help his roommate's father open a new business franchise in Stamford, CT called Sonitrol. Doug's summer job turned into an opportunity to learn the business from the ground up. In 1972, at the age of 24, Doug incorporated Sonitrol of Hartford. Today, many of our long term customers still remember Doug with a tape recorder slung over his shoulder playing recordings of live burglaries in process, as he presented the unique concept of Sonitrol. In 1980, Alcatel, a large French telecommunications and equipment manufacturer purchased the franchiser Sonitrol Corporation. Doug recognized the similarities in both Security and Telephone Systems. The need for local service represented a business expansion opportunity. In 1982, Gary E. LaPlant joined Sonitrol of Hartford from International Telephone and Telegraph to start a telecommunications equipment division. Today the telecommunications division contributes 50% of company revenues and supplies leading edge business telecommunications solutions including telephone systems, voice mail & voice recognition systems and voice and data structured cabling. Sonitrol provides customers with "one stop" business communication solutions. The Telecommunications Division supplies these services to State and local government and private businesses throughout Connecticut, Western Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Since 1984, the Telecommunications Division has received multiple awards from the Connecticut Department of Information Technology to supply the STATE of CONNECTICUT with ongoing services.
